21st century meditation – the doing

This meditation is simple. It involves using the breath to expand each of the energy centers, or chakras, in the body. There is no one way to accomplish this. Use the steps below to experiment and refine your own meditation.

Before beginning, take a moment to release any excess tension in your body.

Step 1 – Breathe down

Quantum physics tells us that there are seven dimensions threaded through each point in space-time, and suggests that two of them are threaded together very tightly. An examination of the energy centers in the body tells us that the inner five energy centers are threaded along a main line of polarity between the base and crown chakras. A good first step to opening the inner chakras is to release the tension along the main line. We can do this by breathing down.

The breath doesn’t actually go down, but it will feel that way as you move your awareness down your body to a space below the pelvis. Another way to think of it is to relax your body in a wave starting with the ribcage and ending down past the pelvis.

Just breathe in, and as you breathe out, let your awareness sink down through your body, down through your hips, and into the ground. At the end of the movement, let the weight of your awareness/energy drop straight down. It’s like dropping a fishing weight down into the water!

You’ll know when you have done it, because you will feel the shift in tension in your spine as your sit-bones settle and you pelvis relaxes into the ground. Breathe down whenever you like during the meditation.

Better yet, see if you can breathe down and at the same time up through the top of your head, establishing your awareness of the line of polarity in both directions.

For a primer on breathing down, see Chapter 2 - Breathe Down.

Step 2 – Breathe out

Breathing out is very much like breathing down, except in a different direction! You simply direct your awareness from a part of your body to outside your body. When that happens, your energy flows with it and loosens up.

The energy centers in the body are illustrated below. The five inner chakras correspond to your pelvis, your diaphragm, your heart, your throat, and your head.

To breathe out from a chakra, simply breathe in, and direct the energy and your awareness from the area of the chakra out past your skin into the space beyond it. Try it first to the front and then to the back.

It may require a little bit of a push. When you do reach outside your skin, you will immediately feel the whole physical area of the chakra open in that direction. Try breathing out to the sides. With experience, you can breathe out in all directions at the same time!

The order in which you expand the inner five chakras is unimportant. Try whatever seems comfortable. Try different sequences and see if it makes any difference. Each additional chakra you open will increase your calm and awareness. It may even give you a “buzz”!

Step 3 – Expand and hold

Now that the energies in the chakras have been loosened and expanded, there is an opportunity to establish an energy boundary larger than your body. Start from any chakra, expand the energy by breathing out, and hold the edge of the new boundary.

Once you can hold the boundary, you can reach for the expanded energies of the other chakras and bring them out to form one new boundary around all of them.

This is a great jumping-off point for many other explorations, and on its own offers a lovely, restful place where all your energies are integrated and harmonized. You can think of it as a energy system tune-up!

Over time, as you learn the pathways of your own energy, this entire meditation can be done in the blink of an eye. Technically, focusing on your breath is not necessary, though it is a useful tool. What is necessary is focusing your awareness.

Focusing awareness is something we do every day in pursuit of thoughts, emotions and desires. When you focus your awareness on your own energy, you dive through those thoughts, emotions and desires to directly experience the energy inside and outside you.

The energy inside and outside you is the energy of the universe that powers everything. Connecting directly to this energy is the goal of every meditation ever created.

Tuning up, not out

In the last century, facing what appeared to be a mechanistic and dehumanizing culture, counter-culture guru Timothy Leary famously said:

My advice to people today is as follows: if you take the game of life seriously, if you take your nervous system seriously, if you take your sense organs seriously, if you take the energy process seriously, you must turn on, tune in, and drop out.

In today’s much more complex culture, people have their electronic devices turned on, they are tuned in to social media, and life is so interconnected that dropping out is not much of an option.

In the 21st century, we are re-humanizing our culture, and for that we need to be in tip-top shape. So tune up your energy system every day. The potential richness of the 21st century awaits!
